CHAS. DARBY SR. PASSED AWAY

 

Funeral services for Charles Darby Sr., were held in St. Mary's church Wednesday morning at 9:00 with Rev. Fr. A. M. Weitekamp singing the requiem high mass.

 

Committal was in St. Mary's cemetery with Martin Barrett, Frank Collins, Asa Burden, Lawrence Steinke, Hugh McCormick and R M. Hockman as pallbearers.

 

All business houses closed during the services out of respect to Mr. Darby who had been a business man here for many years.

 

Mrs. Margaret Wolfe, Thomas, John and Lawrence Darby attended the services.

 

Friends attended the rosary at the Parent chapel Tuesday evening.

 

Charles J. Darby passed away Saturday, Oct. 20th in St. Francis hospital, Freeport. He had been in failing health for some time but had been seriously ill for only a week. He had made his home for the pat few years in St. Joseph's home at Freeport.

 

Charles J. Darby, son of William and Agnes Morgan Darby, was born Dec. 2, 1864 in Glen Logan, Scotland. He received his education in St. Joseph's school at Kilmarnock, Scotland. Mr. Darby came to the United States in 1883.

 

On Dec. 26, 1887, he married Miss Mary Davis, who was born in Kilmarnock, Scotland, and came to the States in 1885. They were married in Philomeinia Cathedral, Omaha, Neb. Mrs. Darby passed away on August 6, 1947.

 

The family came to Tampico in 1902 and he conducted a tailor shop here until he retired about five years ago. He had followed his trade since he was 12 years old. Before coming to Tampico he was in business with his brother in Deadwood, S. D. during the gold rush.

 

Mr. Darby was highly respected in this community where he had lived for many years and always took an active part in community affairs. He was a loyal member of St. Mary's church.

 

He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Nellie Faubert of Malta, Montana and Mrs. Margaret Wolfe of Garden City, L. I.; six sons, Charles Jr. of Downey, Thomas of Cresco, Ia., John of Springfield, James and Hubert of Tampico, Lawrence, Des Moines, Ia. Also eight grandchildren, Mrs. Harry (Genevieve) Grand of Garden City, L. I., Donald Wolfe of Chicago, Mary Ann, Jack and Bill Darby of Springfield; Mrs. Wm. (Phyllis) Thompson and Louanne Darby of Cresco, Ia.; and Mrs. Wm. (Paula Jean Faubert) Ferguson of Great Falls, Mont.; and four great grandchildren.

 

He ws preceded in death by his parents. His father died in 1880 at the age of 57 and his mother in 1900 at the age of 78 years.
