CHARLES DARBY JR. TAKEN BY DEATH

Funeral services for Charles E. Darby Jr., veteran of WWI, were held in St. Mary's church Saturday morning with rev. A. M. Weitekamp officiating.

 

The rosary was recited at Parent's chapel Friday evening.

 

Interment was in St. Mary's cemetery with Grover Rosene, Edwin Temple, George Davis, Fred Heuer, Clayton Smith, Everett Bollivar, Phil Bral, Joe Burke, Roland Sibley, Harold Stickel and Bernard Adams, all members of the Tampico American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Warsposts, serving as casket bearers, color bearers and color guards.

 

Charles E. Darby, son of Charles and Mary Darby, was born Feb. 21, 1892 at Spearfish, S. D. He attended the Sterling and Tampico schools.

 

He was a tailor by trade and worked with his father in the Darby shop in Tampico for some time. He was also a talented musician and played with dance orchestras for many years, part of the time with an orchestra composed of he and four of his brothers. He was a member of the American Federation of Musicians and St. Mary's church and was a charter member of the Tampico American Legion post.

 

He was service overseas during the first World War with the 16th Field Artillery and was a victim of shell shock. He past away last Wednesday afternoon from a heart attack at the veteran hospital in Downey where he had been a patient for 18 years He was the first of four brothers in the service in World War 1 to pass away.

 

He is survived by five brothers, Thomas of Cresco, Ia., John of Springfield, James and Hubert of Tampico and Lawrence of Des Moines, Ia., and two sisters, Mrs. O. D. (Margaret) Wolfe of Garden City, N. Y. and Mrs. Paul (Nellie) Faubert of Windsor, Ontario, Canada.

 

His parents preceded him in death.
