Gladys V. Smith

TAMPICO – Gladys V. Smith, 90, of Tampico, died Friday, Nov. 11, 2011, at her son’s home in Tampico. She farmed alongside her husband in the Deer Grove area for more than 50 years; and worked at Gaulrapp Turkey Farm in Tampico and Galloway Meats in Como.

Gladys was born July 22, 1921, in Harmon, the daughter of Hezekiah and Anna (Sprankle) Portner. She married Adam T. Smith on Jan. 4, 1937, in DeKalb. He preceded her in death Feb. 19, 2001.

She is survived by four daughters, Clara Lawson of Las Vegas, Carol (James) Schultz of Sterling, Judy (Mike) Smithee of Rock Falls and Sue (Kevin) Grimes of Tampico; five sons, Kenneth (Vicki) Smith of Rock Falls, George Smith of Tampico, Pete (Jackie) Smith of Deer Grove, Larry (Melody) Smith of Tampico and Mike (Michelle) Smith of Deer Grove; 27 grandchildren; several great-, great-great- and great-great-great-grandchildren; one brother, Clarence Portner of Amboy; one sister, Mabel Brackmyer of Sterling; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She also was preceded in death by her parents, one grandchild and nine brothers and sisters.

Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Garland Funeral Home in Tampico. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be at Tampico Memorial Cemetery.

A memorial has been established to Passages Hospice.
