Betty Jane Wheelock

PROPHETSTOWN – Betty Jane Wheelock, 91, of Prophetstown, died Saturday, May 24, 2014, at The Alverno in Clinton, Iowa.

Betty was born Aug. 29, 1922, in Hume Township, the daughter of John and Dolly (Baldwin) Plumley. She graduated from Prophetstown High School and married Wayne L. Wheelock on April 2, 1941, in Iowa. He preceded her in death on Dec. 19, 2012. Betty was a member of the United Church of Christ in Prophetstown and was an active volunteer in the community. She enjoyed working with her husband at Wheelock Trucking and wintering in Hot Spring, Arkansas, with him. She also loved gardening.

Survivors include one son, Roger (Gayle) Wheelock of Asheville, North Carolina; one sister, Joyce Naftzger of Prophetstown; one daughter-in-law, Janice Wheelock of Clinton, Iowa; four grandchildren, Jon, Paul, Rob and Mariah; and six great-grandchildren, Amanda, Lauren, Jessica, Eric, Weston and Carrigan.

She also was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Kerry; one daughter, Patricia; two grandchildren, Steve and Meredith; and several brothers and sisters.

A gathering of family and friends begins at 10 a.m., followed by a memorial service at 10:30 a.m. today at United Church of Christ in Prophetstown. The Rev. Andy Ploenzke will officiate.
