TAMPICO TORNADO March 18, 1920

FORMER RESIDENT DEAD

Mrs. Stiles H. PIERCE died at her home in Rock Island, Illinois, at 12:40 o'clock Friday morning, March 5, 1920, after being seriously ill for about three months. Her health had been failing for more than two years.

Millie SHIRK was born July 10, 1857 in Walnut, Bureau County, Illiois, and resided there until her marriage to Mr. Stiles H. PIERCE, which took place March 8, 1881. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Mark SHIRK, old an respected residents of Bureau county. Her father proceeded her in death many years ago, but is survived by her mother. Mrs. M. SHIRK of Walnut, Ill., who was at her bedisde when the final summons came.

Fro twenty years Mr. and Mrs.  PIERCE made their home in Tampico, going to Rock Island twelve years ago from this place. While residing in Tampico, Mrs. Pierce was a member of the First Christian Church and was chancellor in the Royal Neighbors for fifteen years. She transferred her membership to the Memorial Christian church of Rock Island after moving to that city.

She is survived by her husband, four daughters and three sons. The duaghters are: Mrs. Edna MINER, Mrs. Harry McCASKRIN, Mrs. Carl HAY and Miss Alta, all of Rock Island. The sons are Mark of Centeralia, Washington; John P. of Rock Island and Henry of Burlington, Iowa.

Mrs. PIERCE is also survived by her mother, Mrs. Mary SHIRK of Walnut, three sisters, Mrs. J. A. FISHER, of Walnut, Miss Mary SHIRK of Forestburg, S. D., Mrs. Emma CONKIN of Red Oak, Iowa, and three brothers. James of Forestburg, S. D., Elmer of Mitchell, S. D., and Frank of Greenfield, Iowa, besides many many friends for to know her was to love her, as she was not only a kind, loving indulgent wife and mother, but a kind neighbor and true friend.

Her retiring nature led her to hide her best qualities from public gaze, but they were revealed to those who enjoyed her acquaintance yet it was in her home that her true worth was most conspicuous.

Funeral services were held at the home, 840 Twenty-fifth street at 2 p.m.,Sunday. Rev. F. H. DeVol of the Walnut Christian church officiating.

Burial was in the Chippianoch cemetery at Rock Island.
