OBITUARY

Jack D. Thompson, age 73, of 100 S. Washington Street in Tampico, Illinois, died Tuesday, June 3, 2003, at Trinity Hospital in Rock Island, Illinois.

Mr. Thompson was born in Clinton, Iowa, on April 7, 1930, the son of Earl and LaVera (Smith) Thompson. He was united in marriage to Ruth Countryman on December 13, 1953, in Hooppole, Illinois. He was a 1949 graduate of Prophetstown High School. He served in the United States Navy during the Korean War. He farmed in the Tampico and Prophetstown  area during his lifetime and moved from Prophetstown to Tampico in 1994. He was a member of the Illowa Sport Flyers. He was also a member of the Tampico Lions Club and Tampico American Legion Post #574. He made plans for an elevator addition at Tampico United Methodist Church and helped install it and also supervised building a handicap accessible garage with Tampico Lions Club for Floyd Toppert. In 1990, he initiated the Navy Reunion of Squadron VA-728 and Squadron VA-155 and learned to fly his own ultralight at the age of 70. His family and friends were of utmost importance to him.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth Thompson of Tampico, Illinois, two daughters, Pamela (Larry) Pfeiffer of Moline, Illinois and Beth (Frank) Stella of Palatine, Illinois; one son, Duane Thompson of Tampico, Illinois; two granddaughters, Nichole Pfeiffer and her fiance, Chad Versluis, both of Coralville, Iowa, and Rene Pfeiffer of Moline, Illinois; one brother, Robert Thompson fo Carbon Cliff, Illinois; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Mr. Thompson’s body was donated to medical science and a memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 14^th at 11 a.m. at the Tampico United Methodist Church with the Rev. Ralph I. Carr, pastor officiating. A time of sharing will be held on Saturday at the Tampico  United Methodist Church from 10 to 11 a.m.  Burial of his ashes will be at a later date at the Riverside Cemetery in Prophetstown, Illinois. A memorial has been established in his memory to the Tampico United Methodist Church and Tampico Lions Club. Arrangements were completed by the Garland Funeral Home in Tampico.
