Hello! My grandmother is a Hughes and, at 90 years old, we are working on her family history. This is such an amazing site that we've already uncovered a wealth of information. There are three items, specifically obituaries or other death/family records, we wondered if anyone could help us uncover:

1. James Benjamin Hughes born 18 Mar 1826 (England), died 26 May 1877 in Tampico.

2. His wife, Esther A. Beebe Hughes born 9 Jan 1828 (Vermont), died 15 Mar 1902 in Tampico.

Both of my grandmother's great-grandparents, James and Esther, are buried in Tampico per the cemetery listing.

3. Martha J. Hughes born abt 1852 in Illinois. I haven't found record of this second oldest child after the 1870 census nor do i see her mentioned her younger sister's obituary in 1910.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, and no worries if nothing turns up - this site has already taught us much more than we ever expected to learn from so far away! Thank you!

I'll check our Tampico Tornado issues to see if we have anything. I found nothing in the Sterling Gazette Index or online early issues.

From BURIAL PERMITS
Did Esther remarry? I have an Esther Hughes Brewer that died on March 15, 1902 & buried in our TMC.

Gazette Index:
Brewer, M. H. weds Mrs. G. B. Hughes 7 March 1890;wGazette;2;4 (G.B is obviously NOT James, but "B" could be Benjamin.)

Sterling | Evening Gazette March 7, 1890, pg 2;5 - Marriage License issued to Mason H. Brewer & Mrs. Alzadia E Hughes in Tampico.

Marriages - IL State Archives online:
BREWER, MASON H HUGHES, ALZADIA E MRS 1890-03-01 / 00007857 WHITESIDE
(Is this a different Esther Hughes? Same b/d dates as the one you mentioned.)

Mistranscribed on Ancestry.com as "Benoir":
1900 Federal Census - Tampico, Whiteside Co., June 5, 1900
#12 HOH: Brewer, M. H., b. Sept. 1836,MA, age 63, Married 11 yrs.,
WIFE: Brewer, Esther A., b. Jan, 1828, VT,(father/France; Mother/ NY) age 72, Married 11 yrs., 12 children, 10 living

In 1870, Mason & Harriet Brewer were neighbors of James & Esther in Tampico, IL

Another regret for the loss of the 1890 census!
Let's check 1880. . .

Yikes!
I see a "Charles Ewing" has compiled info on this family, but it does not gel with what we have. Is that where you are getting information? I hope not. If so, go back and look at what he has again. He has just "clicked" on any info with the surname he is searching and adding it to his file. That is what I strongly dislike about Ancestry for amateurs! Perhaps he does it on purpose and then "weeds" it out at home. So misleading for the novice and not professional at all.

The 1880 census has Esther widowed, still living in Tampico with some of her children:

I spent a few minutes on Martha Hughes, while taking a break from one of my projects. Tracking Henry Butler and wife Mary Hughes led to two Henry's who had spouse's Mary in Fulton, W-side, but did not seem to add up.

So I turned to Ancestry and seen where a Martha Hughes had been applied to an Albert Fisher and a Theodore Jarvis.

Sterling Gazette Index, 8-5 --- Jarvis, Theodore, Mrs. obit 1 Oct. 1881.

This could be Martha.

Thank you again for the clues! We do a lot of hunting through Ancestry and have run into a number of trees that don't quite jive. I typically shy away from them unless I find supporting records elsewhere, which you all have:

1. What an exciting development in Esther! There is certainly enough documentation in the papers and death records, etc., to consider she did remarry. The 1900 census does not fit what we thought we knew of her parents, but it wouldn't be the first time that type of information was off - ours or what is written in the census. :)

Leading me to Tampico, I was going off cemetery notes listed here, listing Esther with her maiden name Hughes...

http://genealogytrails.com/ill/whiteside/cemtampicoa-l.html

...and how i first found tampicohistoricalsociety. now i see the cemetery records on this site that include what certainly appears to be our esther under the brewer name. ! What a treat.

2. Martha as indeed a possible Jarvis with an obit dated 1 Oct 1881. That information would also fit what little we know of her, but lacked clues to follow that path further.

3. Those are our Eugene and Myron as well. what you found matches our records for them.

In fact it is Myron that is my grandmother's grandfather, and she will be So Pleased to hear the new possible finds regarding her great-aunt and great-grandmother! My husband was reading through this thread last night just as astounded as I was. We've been tracking down all of our family lines, and you all are certainly The Best. We have a few places to visit this summer, but Tampico is tops on our list simply because of this experience. Thank you again!

And! This could also explain further why Susie Hughes, James and Esther's youngest child, was married to Charles Sippel at Mason Brewer's home. It's exciting when something you know takes on new meaning. :) Thank you all again for providing a way to get this information from so far away! I really cannot say that enough.

Definitely! And if anyone runs into Esther Hughes Brewer's obit or that of Martha Jarvis, I would love to read them, but simply knowing these new leads/updates is such a treat. My best to everyone. ;)

Hello Carol! Thank you for the correction on Cora/Dora Townsend. You will not be able to upload a photo to the site. You can either transcribe the obits and post here on the message board (please include name of newspaper & issue date, if possible), or, you can scan the obits and email them to me - tampicohistoricalsociety@gmail.com. I can upload them to the website and link it to this message thread, if you like.
