I have a June 1880 Census that has Elijah and Samatha Winchell Cummings living in Hendricks, Kansas. Is there any newspaper clippings about Elijah and Samatha going out to Kansas? Family reunion or anything?

It appears this family lived in the Rock Falls area in 1910. The Daily Gazette is not indexed that far back on line, so you may want to contact either Marilyn Anderson at the Sterling Library or someone from the Sterling/Rock Falls Historical Society.

The Gazette newspapers are archived at the Sterling Library on micro-film. They are also available via inter-library loan.

I notice he was listed as disabled on the 1880 census - could that have any significance?

I pulled out my 1917 Tampico Tornado microfilm and found Elijah's obit:

May 10, 1917
Former Resident at Rest
The funeral services of the late Elijah CUMMINGS were held Friday afternoon at 2:30 oclock [sic} at the home in Rock Falls. Rev. SIMESTER of the Rock Falls M.E. Church had charges of the service and gave a good talk on the heroism of the old soldiers and the honor of their work. A number of old soldiers were in attendance and Mrs. Fanny KELSEY and Mr. Grant LANDIS sang two beautiful duets. Interment was in the Rock Falls cemetery. Mr. CUMMINGS will be remembered by many of the older residents of Tampico and Yorktown, having lived in both communities for years. He was a brother of the late Hiram CUMMINGS and the last of a family of thirteen children, passing away at the age of nearly 74. He was a veteran of the Civil War, having served four years in the 4th Michigan Vol. Cavalry, and often expressed a wish that he was younger and in good health that he might again offer his life for his country’s honor. He carried a bullet near the lungs until his death, a memento of his services in the war and which no doubt shortened his life as his death was due to tubercular trouble. He was married in 1875 to Samantha WINCHELL and lived the greater part of his life in Rock falls. He leaves to mourn his loss his wife, one daughter, Mrs. John CASTLE and five grandchildren.

Now...
Who was Mrs. John CASTLE?
Where was Samantha nee WINCHELL buried?
Who were the parents of Elijah and Hiram CUMMINGS?

Thanks for your help, Les... Mrs. John Castle was Kathryn (Kate) Mae Cummings. She died in 1919 and Samantha died in either 1920 or 1921 and is buried next to Elijah. John Castle died the following New Years Eve, near Haldane, Illinois , in a car accident. The six (6) children were then left orphans. Helen Castle Doty went on to be a teacher in the vicinity of Mineral Il. She couldn't go to the I.O.O.F. orphanage because she was too old. The oldest boy, Chuck Castle, lived with some relatives, and later had a car garage in Rock Falls, by the bridge and then had his own farm south of Rock Falls. He was also on the school board. John Castle was at the orphange and went on to be a professor at Western University - English Department also served in the army. George Castle had different jobs. The last one that I remember, he was owner of a Hardware Store, but I can't remember the town. Kathryn Castle Miller went on to work in Chicago at a Book Mark business and then married my father, Harris Miller, who was from Princeton (Dover area). Robert Castle, was in the National Guard, and then worked for a company in New York City. Even after he retired, the company asked him to come back to work, he told them he couldn't because of the driving. They fixed it, so that they had a driver pick him up and drop him off everyday. When even that was too much for him, the company put in a fax line and set up a computer plus any of the equipment that he would need.

You asked about the parents of Elijah and Hiram. This is what I have been trying to find out for some time. Even my cousin, MelT, has not been able to find them. That was why I was asking about any news on family reunion's or gatherings that could have been in the newspaper.

Just thought you might like to know that Roberta Lane is buried next to my Mother --- Kathryn Castle Miller in the Castle plot in the old I.O.O.F. cemetery in Rock Falls. She was a cousin to my grand-mother Kathryn (Kate) Cummings Castle.
