Philip Nice, a merchant on Spruce Street, Sterling, was born in Montgomery co., Pa.,Nov. 12, 1845. His parents were Henry and Levinah (Tyson) Nice, natives also of the Keystone State, who moved to Ohio in 1850, and in 1865 to Sterling, this county. Mr. Henry Nice is a farmer and is at present residing north of Morrison. The subject of this notice received in his youth a common-school education, and at the age of the 19 left his paternal home and was a farm laborer by the month for seven years; then worked a rented farm for three years; next he was a clerk at Sterling fur years, since which time he has been a successful merchant in independent business. He deals honorably and is known to be a man of firm principles.

Dec. 25, 1873, is the date of his marriage to Miss Anna Kohnhaus, a native of Indiana, and they are the parents of five children, namely: Amelia, Joseph, Emma, Tobias and Edith.

Mr. Nice is a Republican in his politcal views, and both himself and wife belong to the old Mennonite Church of

Sterling Township.
