Generations of Teachers

"GENERATIONS OF TEACHERS" Six in Immediate Family Serving as School Teachers Six in the family of M. & Mrs. Joseph P. Burden of Tampico including four daughters, one son and a daugh~ ter-in-law are members of the teaching profession in Illinois city and rural schools. Those in the picture are, from left: Mr. & Mrs. Charles Burden of Chicago; Mrs. Mary Burden Foley, Rock Falls; Mrs. Theresa Burden Rank, Morrison; Miss Bernadine (Burden) Selmi, Tampico; and Mrs. Margaret Burden Spears, Tampico. The recent wedding of Theresa was an occasion for this reunion of the Burden family. Mrs. Spears has been teaching 16 years, the longest period of the group, and Mrs. Rank is the youngest in point of service with two years in the profession. The combined teaching experi- ence of the family totals 42 years. This group has come from a long line of teacher descendants. They are descendants from the Thomas Burden Family that came here from Ireland in the year of 1830. He settled in Fairfield township and lived as a retired farmer until l\Iov. 1909.
