JOHN PRIESTMAN, M. D., Neponset.

Among the physicians of Bureau County who have gained wealth and an enviable reputation by close application to their chosen profession, we are glad to record him whose name heads this sketch. Dr. Priestman was born April 19, 1830, in Witham, Lincolnshire, England. His father, Thomas Priestman, was born in 1796 in the same place. He was a farmer in England, and died July 15, 1881, in Neponset, Ill., to which place he came with his children in 1858. The grandfather of our subject was Robert Priestman, a native of England, where he farmed and died. The mother of our subject was Elizabeth Tebbutt,  also a native of England, where she died. She was  the mother of twelve children who reached maturity. Of these seven came to this country, viz.: Charles J, William, Lawrence, Mrs. Jane Christina, Mrs. Sarah Maul, Frederick, and John, our subject, who was educated in his native country, receiving his medical education at the Cambridge University. Dr. Priestman practiced medicine about three years in England, and in 1858 located in Neponset, Bureau co., Il., where he has followed his profession successfully ever since. He was married in Woverhampton, Staffordshire, England, to Martha Law, a native of the above place. Her father was Richard Law. She is the mother of seven children, viz. John L., (who is also a physician), Mary, William H., Ida, Amy, Lillie and Minnie. Dr. Priestman is a member of the  Kewanee Chapter of Royal Arch Masons, and of the Temple Commander, No. 20, K. T., of Princeton, Ill. Politically he is a Republican. Has filled school and town offices many years. In 1882 he visited England and returned in January, 1883. ***end of biography***

Thanks very much.  I think Dr. John Priestman's brother, Charles Priestman (mentioned in the bio you sent), was my relative's father-in-law.  Mary Louise Priestman was b. Aug 1865 in Neponset to Charles Priestman and his wife Winifred Law, more than likely sister of Dr. John's wife, Martha Law (per bio you sent me).

Mary Louise Priestman married Arthur William Barlow (b. 1852 in NY), and they had a son named Frederick Robert Barlow, b. Nov 1878 in Shenandoah IA...Fred married Maude Elizabeth Hull, b. Dec 1882 at Lytle's Station (outside Onalaska) Wisconsin.  Maude and her mother, Elizabeth Lytle Hull, b. 1863 at Onalaska WI, were my direct relatives.

A bit of background to add to your 'pool' of info maybe.

General Notes: 1915 Iowas Census for Appanoose County (Centerville)

Iowa shows a woman, age 48, wife of A. W. Barlow, whose birth was in Illinois. Initials only were used. She states she has been in Iowa for 34 years. Both her parents were born in England. She states she has 8 years of grammar school and 4 years of high school. Good education for that day and age.

An early Illinois physician, John Priestman, lived in Neponset, Bureau, IL as well; Mary Louise's father Charles was probably his brother (see the Produced by Legacy 2009 May 21

grandparents and lineage.\f3Mary Louise married Arthur William BARLOW. Arthur William was born in 1852 Apr in New York.

The 1900 US Census for Centerville IA shows that he has been married to Mary Louise for 24 years--which would make their marriage date around 1886. Since the two boys were born prior to that, he may have been married previously and widowed. The woman named "N" in the 1880 census may have been the first wife.

1915 Iowas Census for Appanoose County (Centerville) Iowa shows an A.W. Barlow, Age 63, born in New York. Occupation: Books and stationery.

He is an Episcopalian; parents were born in IRL and ENG. He attended 11 years of private school. He says he has been in Iowa for 42 years-that is ten more years than his wife reported (32).

Apparently well educated and a local businessman.\f3
