TAHS Website Updates for Sept. 2007

October 2, 2007

Happy Fall Ya'll!
This is my favorite time of the year. Hope the weather
holds for our 3rd annual Yorktown Cemetery Walk, held
Sunday,
Oct. 7, 2007. Weather permitting, we'll meet at the
cemetery at 2 p.m. After presentations, we will go to the
YT Community Bldg. for refreshments. If the weather is bad,
we will meet in the YT Community Bldg for the
presentations. Three folks are being represented:

Carol Fox will enlighten us on her ancestor, Clinton F.
Greenwood
who worked on the Hennepin Canal.

Lorraine Gaskill will tell us of her ggf, Andrew Berge, an
early resident and farmer of Yorktown.

Joan Johnson will speak on Lovina Booth who donated the
land for Booth Park in Tampico. We still have some
questions about this lady, so if you have any info to
contribute, please contact one of us. We are particularly
interested in a marriage to Wm. McCombs in 1912.

The evening will be hosted by Betty Glassburn.

If you have any questions, please contact Joan Johnson,
815-438-7581, garyjoan@thewisp.net, or Denise McLoughlin,
815-438-2065 or tahs@thewisp.net. Hope to see you all
there!

Many thanks to Denise Mickelson and all of her help with
filing and organizing the Family History Library/Research
center. She managed to find the elusive "Island School"
ledger book that someone had asked about 3 or 4 years ago.
No one knew where it was. .. but, Denise found it in a
stack of books upstairs!!!

Also, "Thank You" to Jerrie Schindel for designing the
Hennepin Canal window display for the Hennepin Centennial
Celebration on Sept. 8. She also volunteered to work all
day at the Historical Society that day, so I could be with
my daughter at the fishing derby.(She won first
prize-biggest fish!)

Our programs have been quite interesting this year. We have
had a representative from each church in town come and tell
us the history of their church. In August, Steve Moser gave
and excellent presentation on the Hennepin Canal. The canal
theme continued with our September meeting, with Betty
Marchon, author of Diaries of Fred Honens.

LOTS of special "Thank Yous" this month:
A big thank you to all of you that have commented in
support of our request from www.hamburgerhelper.com for a
grant to get our roof repaired. Winners will be announced
on Nov. 15, so keep your fingers crossed!

Another special thank you to the Conners family (hope I
have spelled their name correctly) for their generous
donation of $500 towards our roof repair!

Thank you to Gail Anderson, who has become my "techy
guru"!(And to Brian Sanders, who has offered to be a
"back-up")

Thank you to the Village of Tampico for paying for another
year for the website!

And what would we do without Melva???

If you are in the area, the guest speaker for our Nov. 27th
meeting is Harold Wright. He will be speaking on the
history of the Eclipse Lawn Mower Co. You may be surprised
to learn of it's connection to Tampico! Please join us if
you are able.

If I can generate enough interest, I would like to have the
Historical Society open one week night a week for genealogy
research. The Family Library/Research Center is open to all
with an interest. Members of TAHS will enjoy additional
benefits, such as access to Ancestry.com I would like your
feedback on this please. I'm thinking a Thursday evening. .

Reminder, the Historical Society is open from April-Oct on
Sat. & Sun. from 1-4 p.m. We are also available by
appointment by contacting president Joan Johnson,
815-438-7581 or garyjoan@thewisp.net. You can also contact
me.

We are planning our Programs for 2008, which will include a
combined meeting with Prophetstown & Lyndon Historical
Societies for a special presentation by "Black Hawk." If
you or someone you know would be interested in sharing some
local history at one of our meetings, please contact me at
815-438-2065 or tahs@thewisp.net

Have a wonderful month.
