TAHS Website Updates for January 2008

February 3, 2008

2007 was an amazing year for us at the TAHS. We set some
goals back in January of 07 and made a wish list. Here are
some of the results:

SUPPLIES NEEDED
WISH LIST: Archive-safe boxes to store our Tampico Tornado
Newspapers - Appx. 90 boxes needed. Estimated cost: $1800
RECEIVED: $1000 from the Tampico Lions Club. Purchased 50
boxes in July.

WISH LIST: Mylar sleeves for individual pages of newspapers
that are deteriorating. We need 12 sheets per newspaper
edition. Estimated cost: $400 for 100 sleeves.
RECEIVED: We were abe to purchase 100 sleeves with the
remainder of the money received from the Tampico Lions
Club. Both the boxes and the mylar sleeves were purchased
at a significant sale price.

WISH LIST: Printer/copier/scanner for Family History
Library
RECEIVED: New printer/copier/scanner from Les Niemi

WISH LIST: Digital camera for TAHS functions.
RECEIVED: Digital cameral from Les Niemi

WISH LIST: Micro-film/micro-fisch reader/printer for
viewing and/or printing the Tampico Tornado newspapers.
RECEIVED: Micro-fisch reader from Andy Hinton

WISH LIST: CPU (computer) for Family History Library
RECEIVED: CPU from "anonymous"!

WISH LIST: The TAHS website be paid for another year.
RECEIVED: The Village of Tampico has paid for our website
through Oct. 2009!

WISH LIST: $13,000 for roof repair (replacement)
RECEIVED: We have saved about half of the money needed
through matching-fund raisers with the RNA and generous
monetary donations from organizations such as Tampico
Community Building and many individuals, including the
Connors, Thompson and the Cassens families. THANK YOU ALL
so much!

The Roof Replacement is the number one priority at this
time. Work is scheduled to begin this spring, contingent on
payment. We will be reapplying for the "Hamburger Helper"
grant and will continue to plan fund-raisers.

WISH LIST: 1a.: Purchase the micro-films of the Tampico
Tornado Newspapers from the IL State Library. 1b. Get our
1876-1881 copies of the Tampico Tornado Newspapers
microfilmed.
RECEIVED: We have been notified by the IL NEWSPAPER PROJECT
that we will be a part of their national project. They will
send a courier to pick up our copies of these papers,
microfilm them AND give us a copy of the microfilms.

OTHER ITEMS STILL NEEDED:
Of course, the roof replacement is the priority. Without
it, not much else matters.

Once we have accomplished the goal of acquiring enough
funds for the roof project, we will continue our quest for
appropriate archiving materials and other items for
storing, preserving and/or displaying our historic items.

We continue to need:
Microfilm/fisch reader/printer (we have readers, we need
one with a printer)
More mylar sleeves for the deteriorating newspapers
Purchase microfilms of the Tampico Tornado Newspapers -
about 12 or 13 films, @ $33.50 ea.
Assorted preservation maintenance-type items, such as
sprays for newspapers, gloves, museum-quality glass for
picture frames.
Metal filing and storage cabinets.
Museum Display tables or glass cases

If you are local, we could use your help:
Volunteer to work 3 hours on Sat or Sundays, April-October,
2008 (I usually work both days upstairs in the Family
History Library, but it would be helpful to have someone
working downstairs as well).
Volunteer to clean downstairs of museum (dust, vacuum,
clean restroom, etc.)
Volunteer to be on committee to publish a newsletter
(probably a quarterly publication)
Volunteer to be a speaker at one of monthly meetings or
suggestions for a speaker. Shirley Lester has suggested a
"Murder Mystery Dinner" and there seems to be a great
interest in this idea. We will need volunteers to help with
this plan.
We REALLY NEED a bathroom installed upstairs in the Family
History Library! We have a nice empty room with access to
plumbing. We just need a stool and sink and someone to
install them. Currently, we have to go downstairs (a bit of
a jaunt, especially if you wait too long, giggle), go
outside to enter the downstairs area to get to the bathroom
in the back of the building! Every year, this seems to be a
bigger project for me and our patrons! (smile)

Many thanks to Geri Cassens, Jerrie Schindel and Denise
Mickelson for their help in organizing our files and
displays.

A big "Thank You" to TheWisp for providing internet service
to us for our Family History Library. www.thewisp.net

The above mentioned "thank yous" are off the top of my
head. I appologize for not being able to mention everyone.
NO donation is insignificant and it is always appreciated.
Even the $5 or $10 donations for transcriptions, etc. are
very appreciated and you would be surprised how quickly
they add up. I bet if everyone that visited the site sent
in $10, we would be able to achieve ALL of our goals and
have $$$$ to spare! I thank you all for every dime or time
you have given.

PICASA WEB ALBUMS - MILITARY
http://picasaweb.google.com/TampicoHistoricalSociety/MILITARY
These albums are located "off-site". They cannot be indexed
by our search engines. The "UP" side is that one: they do
not count towards our photo count on Citymax for which we
are charged and two: you can enlarge the photos, read
details AND leave a comment if you choose. It is especially
nice if there needs to be a correction or additional
information.

TAMPICO MEMORIAL CEMETERY

I have added links to "Find-a-grave" to the following
names: ACKEBERG; BOLLENBACH; BROWN; DENISON; DEVORE; DOW;
FARNHAM; FERRIS; FRITSCH; GLASSBURN;
HERBON; KOLB; LESTER; LOUDENBURG; NEWMAN' PAITH; RASMUSSEN;
ROSENOW; SHERE; THOME; WEST; YARDE
I need to update the "D" listings for the Tampico Memorial
